Some people may not deem that meetings fall into the category of "Activities," but these monthly gatherings are the foundation of our chapter of Pi Omega Pi. They allow us to share ideas, solve problems and ultimately get things done. They also give us access to some much-appreciated social time. We often like to combine meetings with other functions such as new member initiations and our annual Winter Season party.

The National Business Education Association Convention is held annually at different locations in the United States. In 2006, the convention was held in Tamp, FL. The members of the General Convention Committee and Convention Program Committee have created a program with more than 40 educational sessions that meet the varied and common goals of business educators. The convention is great for future educators, current educators and business people. There are sessions on a variety of topics and there is an endless opportunity to learn. To associate and mingle with colleagues in the industry is extremely beneficial. Examples of sessions that will be offered at the convention include:
  • Classroom management
  • Adapting strategies to meet multicultural student needs
  • Assessment strategies to meet student needs and N.C.L.B. requirements
  • Ethics
  • Designing online assessments
  • Middle school curriculum
  • Credit reporting
  • Identity theft
  • Leadership
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Project-based learning
  • Online teaching

The Pi Omega Pi National Convention is held every other year in conjunction with the NBEA National Convention. Pi Omega Pi members conduct their own workshops, attend NBEA workshops, and participate in Pi Omega Pi Business Meetings. At each national convention, a student representative is elected to the Pi Omega Pi Board for a two-year term. Each Pi Omega Pi chapter is allowed two voting delegates when business is conducted. A social is held the first night of each convention.

Prior to the convention, each chapter of Pi Omega Pi submits a summary of chapter activities from the past year, including community, local and national projects. From this, the top national chapters are selected and ranked. Awards are presented at the National Convention. This past year, Zeta Eta was selected as the top chapter of Pi Omega Pi in the nation.

Open House
The Business Education Club and Pi Omega Pi participate in the Kansas State University Open House every year to promote business education. Not only do the groups inform the public about the field, but they also entertain them. Attendees participate in business education activities and win prizes that have been donated by community businesses. The most popular activity has been a typing contest that allows participants to discover their typing speeds.

The community project is an annual chapter activity that benefits people or organizations in the community. For the 2004 project, the chapter participated in "Operation Appreciation" by donating items to benefit soldiers in Iraq and also by writing letters of support to the soldiers. Since our University is very close to Fort Riley, this project made a difference for many people in the community. There are many Manhattan residents and relatives in Iraq right now, and we hope that our efforts brought a little piece of home to their lives.
