Academic Advising

M.S. in Academic Advising
The Master of Science in Academic Advising is designed for advising professionals and future professional advisors seeking to enhance their knowledge and ability to work more effectively with postsecondary students in their academic and career planning. All courses are offered online, which serves graduate students in Kansas and students both across and outside the country.

Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Know and apply advising strategies to institutional advising programs and individual advising.
2. Know and apply theories of career development and related constructs to assist students with their academic and career planning.
3. Understand the influence of multicultural factors on the advising relationship and the content of advising with students.
4. Understand the needs and characteristics of specific groups of students (e.g., students with learning disabilities, student athletes, adult students, exploratory students) and apply this to academic advising.

Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising
The graduate certificate in academic advising prepares professionals who are entering the field of academic advising who wish to expand their knowledge about college student personnel services, including learning theory, student development theory, counseling skill development, career development, and academic advising. In collaboration with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), the department has developed a 15-credit hour program that is consistent with standards and guidelines for academic advising specified by the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) in Student Services. The courses within the certificate program contribute to the student's understanding and practice of these standards and guidelines. The courses are delivered exclusively in an on-line format.

2. Students will comprehend the psychosocial factors that impact student learning.
3. Students will comprehend how student development theories benefit academic advising.
4. Students will demonstrate knowledge of career development theories and related constructs.
